US experts to examine heart problems in teens after Covid shootings – Times of India

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – An expert panel convened by the leading U.S. health agency will hold a meeting on Wednesday to review data on more than 300 confirmed cases of heart muscle inflammation in adolescents and young adults after receiving vaccines Covid mRNA.
The committee, hosted by the Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention (CDC), will hear a risk-benefit analysis as researchers explore whether the blows can cause myocarditis, as well as cases of inflammation of the heart mucosa, pericarditis.
Israel was initially the first country to identify a possible link.
“These cases are rare and the vast majority have resolved completely with rest and supportive care,” the CDC director said. Rochelle Walensky last week before the meeting, originally scheduled for last Friday but postponed due to a new holiday.
Confirmed cases have been investigated following initial reports to vaccine safety surveillance systems and come from more than 20 million adolescents and young adults who have been vaccinated, Walensky added.
While 300 out of 20 million is a small number, it is still likely higher than one would otherwise expect for the age group.
A previous meeting on the issue convened on June 10 by the Food and drug administration understood that most cases were in young men and occurred within a week of the second dose.
The new CDC hearing will dig deeper into updated data that has been independently verified, rather than self-reported.
Truck Insist on, director of pediatric infectious diseases at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, told AFP: “I am concerned, but I want to stress that the cause and effect relationship has not yet been established.”
He said his own hospital had seen a few cases of teenagers developing chest pain a day or two after the second dose of an mRNA vaccine.
the Pfizer The vaccine is currently the only vaccine authorized for use in adolescents 12 years of age and older.
“On the other hand, the cases have been relatively mild,” Rubin added, with patients returning to normal within days of treatment with a drug like ibuprofen.
Myocarditis is known to be seasonal, with a higher incidence during the summer months potentially linked to enteroviruses, and is estimated to affect one in 100,000 children per year.
Even though a causal link to vaccines is established, Rubin said it should be weighed against the risks to children from Covid.
While children are less affected than adults, the virus has still hospitalized more than 3,000 children in the United States during the pandemic, and killed more than 300, according to official data. Some 2,700 people under the age of 30 have died from Covid.
“We have actually had more children infected with Covid than we know of who have had long-term impacts, some of whom have been quite ill with heart symptoms in the hospital,” said Lee Savio Beers, president of the hospital. ‘American Academy of Pediatrics.
Other experts have taken a more cautious line.
Monica Gandhi, infectious diseases and public health expert at University of California San Francisco, said the United States had gone beyond recommendations from some other countries on adolescent vaccination.
These include Germany and Israel, which only recommend vaccinating high-risk adolescents, while Britain is still reviewing the data and has yet to make a decision.
“It’s a new vaccine, it’s seen more and more of a concern, and every other country except us has done something wrong on the safety side,” she said. told AFP, adding that she was holding back having her 13-year-old child. receive a second dose until she knows more.
